Even though the domain only has a DR of 17, the backlink profile has some really high quality backlinks.

Let’s take a look:

  • (DR 95)
  • (DR 89)
  • (DR 89)
  • (DR 87)
  • (DR 86)
  • (DR 85)
  • (DR 84)
  • (DR 83)
  • (DR 71)
  • (DR 71)
  • (DR 67)
  • and so much more…

The referring domain graph looks fine too, nothing suspicious is going on, like spiky graphs, etc.

Backlink Relevance:

Having backlink relevancy is quite important. A check through SemRush will need to be performed for us to see what the backlink relevancy is. So, let’s take a look:

We are definitely seeing some relevancy!

Clean Up:

Every aged domain typically requires a clean-up process. Often, quality backlinks would be pointed toward internal pages of the aged domain. These typically would need to be recreated and redirected. A clean-up process is necessary in order for us to retain the authority (link juice) of the domain.

As we are seeing above, the majority of backlinks are pointed towards the homepage, which is good.

However, some internal pages are getting some quality backlinks, which means we will need to recreate and redirect those pages.

Anchor Text Profile:

The anchor text profile can tell us a lot about the health of the domain. A thorough inspection is required when it comes to aged domains in particular.

Ideally, once you have filtered the referring domain from highest to lowest on the anchor texts, you should expect to see either a naked anchor text at the top (e.g or the name of the site (e.g Niche Website Builders)

So, let’s take a look at the anchor text profile:

As you can see, we are seeing branded anchor texts right at the top, which is great!

Also, we are not seeing anything that shouldn’t be there and that’s not relevant to the niche.

The Strategy

When building content sites we generally recommend starting with informational content. Why? Because you can rank informational content more quickly and easily than commercial content. This allows the site to start gaining some traction before adding affiliate-based content or other monetary streams.

The faster you can build up traffic, the quicker you can start making some money with the site through Ad revenue. And when a site starts making money, you can use this income to supplement or cover any future growth.

Once the site has gained some momentum you can start adding in other revenue streams such as affiliate offers.

The Strategy For This Domain:

The food space is big, it’s not a secret. However, there are many different areas we could tackle the food niche in.

There is room for success, with the right strategy of course…

So, here’s our strategy:

  • Informational pieces of content on cooking (e.g how to skin fish, how to julienne carrots etc)
  • Informational pieces of content on world food/cuisines, food traditions, etc.
  • Best restaurants in X & Y city (e.g 10 best vegetarian restaurants in New York)
  • Listicle types of content around recipes (e.g 10 beef tacos recipes)

The monetization can come from display adverts, of course, but also from affiliate programs on everything food/cooking products, or you could sign up with farm shops for example, and arrange food boxes delivered to people.

In terms of affiliate programs that would be applicable to this domain, examples can be found in the extended lists below.

The Competitors

Competitor research is essential in order for us to get an idea of what competitors within our authority or less are achieving, and the strategy they are using.

The first site we would like to show you is, a DR 8.
A much lower authority than And this domain is doing really well!

This domain is generating 31k according to Ahrefs per month. Also remember, Ahrefs does not represent the real traffic, only GA & GSC can show the real traffic, and typically, SemRush underestimates traffic by around 2-3x. So the reality is, that this domain has probably around 150k in traffic per month accurately.

The site only has 107 pages, and 66% of the traffic comes from the top 11 pages.

We also want to show you what sort of content this site is covering:

The domain is targeting the classic listicle types of articles related to recipes that we mentioned we would do in the strategic plan. So, this site is a great example of what can be achieved by doing that.

Using the “Tomb-Raiding” technique we could target the best performing content on and also weaker competitors and use our competitive DR to rank on similar content. For more details on our Tomb Raiding technique, see here.

The second example is, a DR 26, slightly higher authority than us.

This site is generating 46k per month according to Ahrefs.

This domain is targeting the best restaurants in X and Y around the US, something we discussed in the strategy to move forward. However, we won’t just be limited to the USA, we will target the Best Restaurants all over the world!

Let’s take a look at what this domain is ranking for at the top:

Upon clicking on one of these posts, as you can see it’s a classic listicle type of content:

As we have just seen – there is plenty of opportunity for The domain can tackle many different angles, and a lot can be achieved.

Alternatively, the domain is also an excellent opportunity for a 301 redirect to an existing food site.
